How to add links in WordPress

Adding links in WordPress

One of the most important elements in website navigation is the links, so their significance is highly substantial. They can help your website a lot by increasing its rank on all search engines.

Why are website links so important?

If I would have to give a simple and succinct definition of what a link is, I would simply say that they are a clickable element that leads visitors to other pages.

To go a little deeper, if we would have to categorize them, we can say that links can be either internal (they lead to different pages or posts of the same website), or external (outbound – they lead to outer sites).

Internal links help to increase the amount of time users are spending on your website and by doing this your authority will increase and so will the ranking in search engines.

It’s obvious that if visitors will click on different links from your website, they will have a better understanding of your content thus you will have more engagement which will lead to a higher number of conversions and ultimately sales.

External links are usually used to offer extra information to your visitors which will only add more worth to your website. Google rates websites on reliability also so these will help you in your ranking.

Using the block editor in WordPress is very easy. You just have to create or edit a new post

If you are using Gutenberg, just select the part of the text to which you want to attach the link and click on the link button which should pop just over the block you are editing.

It’s pretty useful to know that if you are planning to use a link from your own website, it’s enough to start typing a part of the title and WordPress will automatically find it for you.

Also, as you can see, you can use the toggles and choose if your link is going to be opened in a new tab or if it’s a no follow link (you are going to have this only if you previously activated the Yoast SEO plugin), or if it’s sponsored.

How do i add links to my text widgets?

Your predefined widget areas where you can add widgets are dependant on the theme you are using.

Part of the widgets are automated and don’t have many options, such as Recent Posts where you already have links and don’t need to add anything further.

Nevertheless, if you want to add in your sidebar custom text with links, you can use the text widget.

You just have to go to Appearance > Widgets, add a new block, and then insert a paragraph widget to the widget area of your choice. The steps are the same as I showed you above in adding links to a post.

Don’t forget to hit Update and you are done.

How do i add links to my Navigation Menu?

If you want to add links to your navigation menu, just head over to Appearance > Menus.

If you want to add a page that is located on your site, WordPress will automatically add a link to all the posts and pages you have in your menu. However, if you want to add a link outside your site, click on Custom Links from the dropdown in the left and enter the URL. Don’t forget to click on Add to Menu and you are done.
